New York City Festival in Melbourne

Opening next weekend MoMA : 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art as the 2018 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.

In partnership with The Museum of Modern Art New York the NGV will display a huge consignment of paintings, sculptures and design objects by leading 20th century US artists.

Consisting of over 200 key works, arranged chronologically into eight thematic sections, the exhibition traces the development of art and design from late-nineteenth-century urban and industrial transformation, through to the digital and global present.

The exhibition is open from June 9 to October 7.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is promised to every American, but when Realist artist Hopper drove around the country or examined its congested cities, he saw isolation and loneliness. Gas — painted on the eve of war — speaks to that mood of alienation. Notice how Hopper’s lone figure is almost engulfed by a dark forest and is cast in a melancholic ‘Twin Peaks’ light.
