It’s that time of year again when Melbourne celebrates Christmas presented by City of Melbourne and supported by Federation Square and TAC. It all begins with Santa arriving at the new Christmas Square in Federation Square on November 30. From 6pm roving performers will entertain children and big kids alike, with a family-friendly stage show entertaining from 7pm right through to the 9pm where the crowd eagerly awaits the Christmas Festival Official Tree Lighting Ceremony when Melbourne’s 16m-tall Christmas tree springs to life to launch the festival’s celebrations.
Santa’s got a brand-new house, adorned with splendid decorations right in front of Melbourne Town Hall so be sure to snap your free photo with the kids and the man in red.
This year Gingerbread Village will be showcased in the Riverside Gallery at Federation Square featuring 560 kilograms of gingerbread, 420 kilograms of royal icing, 185 kilograms of marzipan and around 900 miniature Christmas trees, as well as the first ever international structure, the Osaka Castle from Melbourne’s Japanese sister city, Osaka. Pastry chefs will also be baking and selling delicious treats, the perfect Christmas gifts for friends and family! Entry is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Every night from 9pm Christmas Square will also feature sound and light shows and there will be exclusive concerts on Fridays nights. You can get creative at the Federation Square Christmas projections using “fingerpaint” technology you can turn Fed Square into your canvas and create your own light projections. This year, the Christmas Projections will also be down by the harbour at Docklands projected onto the ‘Silence’ sculptures along New Quay Promenade.
Everywhere you look, there’s somewhere insta-worthy for those selfies in the Melbourne this Christmas!
