Historic haute couture at NGV

A huge collection of couture fashion and Parisian fashion from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century is on display at National Gallery of Victoria. The collection has been purchased for the gallery by philanthropist Krystyna Campbell-Pretty in memory of her late husband Harold. Most of these pieces have never been exhibited in Australia before.

The exhibition includes over 150 garments by Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Christian Lacroix, Dior and more. Who doesn’t love Coco Chanel’s iconic little black dresses! There is a whole suite on display with the earliest from 1919.

Also on display is Yves Saint Laurent’s groundbreaking Le Smoking, a women’s tuxedo from 1967 when women wearing pants was daring,

The exhibition also includes samples, sketches from the extensive fashion research collection including workbooks, photographs and fashion magazines, journals and periodicals.

Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Gift exhibition runs until July 14 and entry is free.
