After winning the viewer’s hearts during his stint on Masterchef, Khanh Ong brings his home-style Vietnamese to The George on Collins. The city eatery’s contemporary European menus are gone. Instead you will find dumplings steamed in banana leaf, a Vietnamese take on bao and tropical cocktails.
The venue now boasts a collection of revamped private spaces. In the centre is The Parlour encompassing their long, New York-style bar where you can book a table or hire the space exclusively. Tucked away upstairs is The Attic, a secluded, semi-private space behind a curtain or downstairs is The Den, a very private space with its own entrance. You will find The Rumpus Room at the back, a private dining and cocktail space ideal for that exclusive dinner or cocktail party. For some place cool, classy and sophisticated The Cellar is ideal for gatherings where style is key. It can act as a private dining room for up to 45 people, or be opened up into a cocktail space for over 200.
As a partner in the business Khanh Ong works alongside head chef Quim Hernandez to bring fresh menus and ideas to the venue. The three new menus are anchored by traditional flavours and techniques but with plenty of creativity. You can look forward to glass dumplings with prawns, pork and heirloom carrots, slow-cooked lamb shoulder matched with coriander sauce or a half rooster done with a ginger and fish sauce caramel.
Leave room for dessert, creations like Khanh’s ‘drunk’ sticky date pudding with whisky caramel and vanilla! The Vietnamese influence reaches the cocktail list too including the lemongrass and chilli infused Hot In Ha Noi and the guava- and coconut-heavy One Night in Saigon.
Maybe influenced by his days as a DJ, Khanh Ong wants the eatery to have a party-ready atmosphere where people come together to enjoy the best things in life, great food, drinks, company, music, laughter and service.
