In the lead up to World Turtle Day this Sunday 23 May, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium has announced it’s releasing a children’s book to raise funds to help care for sea turtles in the wild.
The gorgeous story, written and illustrated by Kirsty Esson – artist, turtle lover and SEA LIFE team member – tells the true story of Blair, an injured turtle who was rescued, rehabilitated and released by the team at SEA LIFE Melbourne.
Visitors to the Aquarium this Sunday will be able to enjoy live readings of Blair the Loggerhead Turtle in the Shipwreck Theatre from 10am – 3pm. The new book will be available online and in the Aquarium’s gift store from Sunday onwards.
Retailing at just $15, 100% of profits from the sale of Blair the Loggerhead Turtle will be donated to registered charity the SEA LIFE Trust, which will in turn utilise the funds on conservation campaigns, scientific research and inspiring education – all in the name of the sea turtle.
“As one of the team members who cared for Blair, I’m really happy that we have created this book to tell her story and raise money for the SEA LIFE Trust. The book explores the dangers that turtles face in the wild, how we released Blair back into the ocean in 2016 and where she travelled afterwards. It’s important to tell stories like this one and raise awareness of the real threats facing marine life,” said Brianna O’Connor, Aquarist at SEA LIFE Melbourne.
SEA LIFE Melbourne is currently home to two sea flatback turtles – Thorpey and Moana – who are ambassadors for their species, helping raise awareness of the plight of sea turtles in the wild.
Blair the Loggerhead Turtle is also available as a part of a beautiful set in collaboration with other Australian and New Zealand SEA LIFE attractions including SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium and SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast.
